Papers, 1732-1844 (bulk 1830-1843).

The collection consists of the correspondence of various members of the Hopkins family. The bulk of the papers center around Hannah Philippa Ludwell (Hopkins) Lee (1811-1844) of "Wheatland," Jefferson County, Va. (now W. Va.). Her letters, 1830-1843, to family members concern family news and descriptions of daily home life in antebellum Virginia. Also in the collection are letters, 1791-1826, from John Hopkins (1757?-1827) of Alexandria and Richmond, Va., to his daughters, Hannah Philippa Ludwell (Hopkins) Lee and Lucy Lyons (Hopkins) Turner (b. 1800?) of Alexandria, regarding their education as young ladies and his life as an attorney in Alexandria and Richmond.
